The word ‘mags’ comes from the material wheels were made of, which is magnesium and is very light. But, because of its propensity to catch fire, they were replaced with magnesium alloy wheels (a mix of metals).

The rim is the metal part of the wheel on which the tyre is mounted. This can be made of steel or an alloy of aluminium or magnesium. Alloy wheels are stronger and lighter than steel wheels compared to their weight and have greater heat conduction as well.
